Abstract

|
Fifty rats of 150gm were used to evaluate the pulmonary oxygen toxicity and divided into 5 experimental groups as follows:.
Groups I : Normal control groups
Groups II : Exposed to pure oxygen under 2 atmospheric pressure for 12 hours
Groups III : Exposed to pure oxygen under 2 atmospheric pressure for 6 hours
Groups IV : Exposed to pure oxygen under I atmospheric pressure for 12 hours
Groups V : Exposed to pure oxygen under 1 atmospheric pressure for 6 hours
The results obtained from the pathology and histochemical studies of the lungs of experimental animals were as follows:
1. Lung/body weight ratios were significantly increased in animal exposed to pure oxygen, especially in Group II.
2. Different pathologic findings such as pulmonary edema, congestion, pneumonia, atelectasis, emphysematous change, and widening of interalveolar space were observed.
3. In histochemical studies, the reticulin fibers in the alveoli and the respiratory bronchioles were considerably , destroyed but elastic fibers were not. Generally, the severity of these findings was proportional to duration of exposure and atmospheric pressure.
